As mentioned above, there are no doubt hundreds more great Portal 2 mods out there, but the ones listed below are our personally curated cream of the crop. You can either click the individual links to go straight to the mod question, or just carry on reading the whole list.

Time moves in one direction. Moving objects in the present will change their position in the future. You can bring future objects back into the present, so they exist in the same map as their past self. It opens the game up. Glass walls in the present could be broken in the future, letting you portal into different areas across space and time. The same cube can be pressing two different buttons in the present. There are 25 levels of Valve-quality puzzling, and the new mechanic never outlives itself.

Best Portal 2 Mods

A lot of Portal 2 mods try to bring in their own ideas regarding the mechanics. Portal Stories: Mel is an attempt at making a Valve-quality campaign without adding new mechanics. Mel finds herself stuck in an Aperture Science salt mine full of tests.

The new weapon is called the Warp Cannon, and it fires a bouncing green projectile that you can then instantly warp to wherever it hits. Combing this weapon with the Portal gun allows for some really interesting puzzle solutions, like shooting the Warp Cannon through a portal to get to a specific spot.

Portal 2 has quite a few mods that add on new stories and areas to explore based on Aperture Science. Eidolon is one of those, but its biggest differentiating factor simply boils down to its aesthetic and visual design.

Portal Reloaded is the newest entry on the list, as it just officially released in April 2021. This Portal 2 mod has players going through a special test course deep within a previously forgotten area of Aperture Science. The twist here is that players will have access to a Triple Portal Device, allowing the creation of three portals at once.

The third portal is a green one that actually affects time. It links past and present, allowing for some truly mind-bending puzzles. The mod contains 25 puzzles in total, new voice lines, new music, and more.

Another fantastic co-op mod, this time with a major twist in gameplay. Confinement gets its name from the fact that although you very much need to work with a friend, you are always kept separate. Each player (either Atlas or P-Body) has control of only either the blue or the orange portal. By taking turns (something that always goes well between friends) you must figure out how to progress each level with the constraints given to you both. Each player can only do so much to progress in the levels before they have to give up control to their friend by locking themselves in a sectioned-off room. The other player now has to see what they can do with their share of the portal controls. An excellent way to shake up the puzzle style found in the other games.

This priced mod (around $5) much like the base game, involves solving puzzles in Aperture Science, with a unique gun that shoots blue and orange projectiles, however this mod is much more unique than that might sound. Rather than portals, this ingenious mod utilises an entirely new device: The Paint Gun. Gels were introduced in Portal 2 and provide a totally new angle and mechanic to consider on top of your portals. The two gels featured in this mod are the blue repulsion gel which acts like a trampoline on any surface it touches, and the orange propulsion gel which allows players to travel across affected surfaces at wild speeds. Combining these two liquids made for some fantastic moments in Portal 2, but an entire mod dedicated to these crazy gels is just a perfect recipe for fun.

Portal 2 is a game about underground adventure, and its setting is gloomy. However, the Portal mods give the opportunity to see how the Aperture looks like if it is not the testing environment. You may need some time to adapt to these changes, but the sky above the protagonist gives the feeling of freedom.

Aperture Ireland is a new story about the test subject in the regional branch of the terrific Aperture. New puzzles are waiting for you; now you can solve them even quicker. Immerse in the dark secret of the facility. With the second release, Aperture Ireland had become one of the best Portal 2 mods.

This is one of the greatest Portal mods for those who like playing with friends. You'd better choose your co-gamer carefully because you will have to rely on each other. If one of you makes the wrong step, both of your lose. Although the map is quite short, it is full of fun.

If you dreamt of trying the Time Machine, try Portals mods! You can bring your twin from the past to help you with solving riddles. Your copy will do identically the same actions as you do. Press the button on the time machine to record all your actions and return to the past if necessary.

Here comes a new chamber full of challenging riddles. Portal 2 mods such as ALTO make the game even more varied, intriguing, and so much funnier. Some gamers claim that the last jump on the ledge is impossible in landing. Try it yourself and prove that nothing is insurmountable for hardcore gamers.

If you install the Dilapidation which is one of the best Portal 2 mods, you will again wake up in a destroyed room. Your aim will be again to escape the rooms and do this as quickly as possible. You will find lots of destroyed objects which will come in hand in the next chamber.

We recently gave you our selection of the best Portal 2 single player maps and campaigns available on the Steam Workshop. There's some great feats of level design in that list, but if you really want to see mapmakers skills stretched to the limit, you have to turn to co-op.

With two brains and four portals available, the levels must be exponentially more complicated. They need to emphasise teamwork, provide an inventive challenge and be tightly crafted so as to stop players exploiting their way through. With that in mind, I enlisted the help of my Perpetual Testing Partner to dig out the ten best co-operative maps around. As always, if you've a favourite that's not listed, let us know about it.

A clever little chamber comprised of two rooms, one on top of the other. While neither player can reach the other directly, laser guarded holes in the ground allow you to share the limited resources back and forth, and buttons allow you to deactivate obstacles in your partners way. There's not much portalling to be done, but co-ordination and teamwork are still key. Download Camtasia here .

Part of a series of co-op maps made by mapmaker LPChip. Part one starts with a tricky excursion funnel challenge that requires you to really think through the positioning of each player before you make a move. But it's the finale, in which you share a sphere back and forth between each other, that really exemplifies the "accidental" comic slapstick at the heart of the the best Portal 2 co-op maps. Like the original Portal (2007), players solve puzzles by placing portals and teleporting between them. Portal 2 adds features including tractor beams, lasers, light bridges, and paint-like gels that alter player movement or allow portals to be placed on any surface. In the single-player campaign, players control Chell, who navigates the dilapidated Aperture Science Enrichment Center during its reconstruction by the supercomputer GLaDOS (Ellen McLain); new characters include robot Wheatley (Stephen Merchant) and Aperture founder Cave Johnson (J. K. Simmons). In the new cooperative mode, players solve puzzles together as robots Atlas and P-Body (both voiced by Dee Bradley Baker). Jonathan Coulton and the National produced songs for the game.

The initial tutorials guide the player through movement controls and interactions with their environment, and in the case of the cooperative campaign, interactions with the other player. Gameplay revolves around the use of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, which can create a pair of two portals on suitable surfaces through which the player or objects can pass through. Characters can use these portals to move between rooms or to "fling" objects or themselves across a distance.[4][5]

Additional game elements not featured in the original Portal include Thermal Discouragement Beams (lasers), Excursion Funnels (tractor beams), and Hard Light Bridges, all of which can be transmitted through portals.[2][6][7][8] Aerial Faith Plates catapult the player and objects through the air. The player must disable sentient, lethal turrets or avoid their line of sight. The Weighted Storage Cube has been redesigned, and there are new types: Redirection Cubes, which have prismatic lenses that redirect laser beams, spherical Edgeless Safety Cubes, an antique version of the Weighted Storage Cube used in the underground levels, and a cube-turret hybrid created by Wheatley after taking control of Aperture.[2][9] The heart-decorated Weighted Companion Cube reappears briefly.[10] Early demonstrations included Pneumatic Diversity Vents, shown to transport objects and transfer suction power through portals, but these do not appear in the final game.[2][9][11][12] The typical objective of a test chamber or level is to use the portal gun and provided gameplay elements to open a locked exit door and progress to the next chamber. 2ff7e9595c
